Hey MW, good to see u again. I know we've talked about this before and I've researched the things you gave me, but after much consideration I still believe that this is a physical temple that they are talking about. I'm not a bible scholar by any means, but I've taken a few courses regarding biblical exegesis, and one of the things they stressed was when there is a passage in question, look at the context of the situation; this will help determine the meaning.
So what is the context of this passage? In Matthew 24, the context is the disciples asking Jesus for a "sign" of His coming and of the end of the world. They linked the two together and actually thought it was going to happen in their lifetime, so they wanted something that they could visualize to let them know that the time of Jesus' return was close. After Jesus gives them a general overall condition of what things will be like, He then gives them a very specific event that will start the last 3 1/2 years; the great tribulation period.
Mt 24:15
When
ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Mt 24:16
Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Mt 24:17
Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
Mt 24:18
Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
Mt 24:19
And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
Mt 24:20
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
Mt 24:21
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Mt 24:22
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
Verse 15 refers to Daniel 12:11
Da 12:11
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
What Jesus is doing is giving us, the people alive at the end, a physical/visual event that will take place so that we can: 1) Know the exact time of where we are in the prophetic timeline, and 2) Save people physically whose names are written in the book.
Da 12:1
¶ And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time:
and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.So how does He do that? He gives them a sign, so that when they SEE it, those people living in Judaea, can flee to the mountains where God will provide and protect them. Notice the urgency required once this event takes place. The moment they see it, they need to start running, Jesus says don't even go back into your house to pack, just run. The wrath that Satan is going to pour out via the antichrist is going to be swift and horrific. The timeframe for this event is right after Michael and his angels have just defeated Satan and his angels and Satan is permanently banished from heaven.
Re 12:7
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Re 12:8
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Re 12:9
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Re 12:12
¶ Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them.
Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Not only does Satan have great wrath, but he now has been given power and also, God removes His hedge of protection from most believers. This is why I believe the book of Job was written, to give us insight into what is going to happen. What happened with Job will now happen on a world wide scale and only those who have been watching and waiting for Jesus' return will be protected.
Re 3:10
Because thou hast
kept the word of my patience, I also will
keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.Re 3:3
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent.
If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
The word for patience in v10 is hupomone and means: from 5278; cheerful (or hopeful) endurance, constancy:--enduring, patience, patient continuance (waiting). God tells us in His word in multiple places to be watching and waiting for Jesus' return. So for those that do, He will "keep" us (tereo: to guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon;) from the hour of temptation which will come upon the whole world to "try" (peirazo: to test (objectively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline:--assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt(-er), try) them.
For those believers who are actively watching and waiting, God will provide and protect them from the great tribulation, BUT, notice what He says for those Christians who aren't watching, it says He will come upon them as a thief. This is the same terminology He uses in 1 Thes 5.
1Th 5:2
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1Th 5:3
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
1Th 5:4
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
For believers, Jesus won't come as a thief, or He shouldn't, as long as we are watching, it should only be to the unbelievers that this happens. But we see clearly that Jesus warns us that those believers that aren't watching when He returns, that He will come upon them as a thief as well. This means that they won't have God's protection surrounding them and they will have to endure the horrific times and either die a martyr or depart from the faith and take the mark and worship the antichrist.
This is why I believe that this event, this abomination of desolation, is an event which deals with a real temple building in which the antichrist will enter, desecrate, and then proclaim himself to be God. It's something that people need to know for sure takes place so that they can know when to flee. If this refers to a spiritual event, then no one could know for sure when it takes place because we can't see what takes place in the heart/mind. But unless these people act immediately, they won't be protected.
Now, getting to 2 Thes 2, what is the context?
2Th 2:2
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the
day of Christ is at hand.
The day of Christ is the day of the Lord, when the resurrection/rapture takes place and the battle of Armageddon. This takes place immediately after the great tribulation, but because of the intense persecution they were experiencing, someone had written a letter saying that the great tribulation had begun. Thus, Paul is writing to alleviate their fears and also then tells them that 2 things MUST take place before the great tribulation starts; a falling away (departure from the faith (1 Tim 4:1) and the man of sin revealed. Paul then goes on to tell us how and when he will be revealed, and that is when he goes into the temple (the holy of holies), commits the abomination of desolation, and proclaims himself to be God.
2Th 2:3
¶ Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first,
and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2Th 2:4
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
To reveal means: to take off the cover, i.e. disclose:--reveal. So what Paul is telling us is that there are two things that we will be able to visualize, things that we will be 100% sure of. Again, if this is something spiritual, then we couldn't know for sure. People who fall away (apostasia - defection from truth (properly, the state) ("apostasy"):--falling away, forsake) will openly state that they no longer believe in Jesus Christ and will denounce their faith in Him and take the mark and worship the antichrist as God. The current term for a movement that is gaining popularity is called "exvangelical", and refers to someone who once believed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, but has renounce their belief. So when someone does that, we will know for sure when that happens just as sure as we will know when the man of sin reveals himself by physically going into the temple, committing the abomination of desolation and proclaiming himself to be God.
Well, that was a bit more than I had anticipated, but one thing led to another. Any way, that is why I believe there will be a physical temple built, which means we should be seeing that happen within the next year or two. If I'm correct, then it definitely needs to be up and functioning before March of 2027.
